Dr. Rafiq Ahmad

Dr. Rafiq Ahmad is a distinguished innovator and thought leader in smart systems and sustainable technologies, dedicated to transforming industries and enhancing societal well-being through cutting-edge advancements. Serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta, Dr. Ahmad is also the visionary founder and director of the Smart & Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Laboratory (SMART Lab), a hub for groundbreaking research and innovation, and Aquaponics 4.0 Learning Factory (AllFactory), focusing on Sustainable Production in an indoor controlled environment. Dr. Ahmad also serves as the Faculty Associate for the Nasseri School of Building Sciences and Associate Director of Experiential Learning, shaping the future of engineering education.

Awards & Honors

Renowned for his impactful contributions, Dr. Ahmad was honored with Edify Magazine’s Edmonton Top 40 Under 40 Award (2022) for his trailblazing innovation and streamlined sustainable technology solutions that drive meaningful change. In 2023, his exemplary work in digital technology earned him the prestigious Alberta Science and Technology Award (ASTech) for Digital Technology Innovation. With strong academic contributions (publications, patents, products) and many spin-off companies, he inspires progress through research and collaboration. Holding his Ph.D. and Master’s degrees from leading institutions in France, Postdoctoral experience from Luxembourg, along with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Pakistan, Dr. Ahmad embodies a global perspective and a relentless commitment to advancing technology for a sustainable and prosperous future.
